Baxter Bridge Replacement Project

Last updated on November 30, 2023

Baxter Bridge

Baxter Bridge is on Trinity Valley Road, approximately 11 kilometres east of Enderby.

Last Updated: November 29, 2023

The existing one-lane bridge is primarily made of timber. It is being replaced with a two-lane steel and concrete bridge. It will be built to current standard with a design life of 75 years.

Trinity Valley Road and Miska Road will be realigned. This will enhance safety while minimizing impacts to the public and surrounding properties.

The new bridge will increase public safety and corridor reliability.

Status

The main contract to replace the bridge was tendered in October 2023 and awarded to Formula Contractors Ltd.. Construction is anticipated to begin in winter 2023/24.

Project benefits

  • Improved load capacity will enhance commercial hauling through elimination of legal load restrictions
  • Increased safety and traffic flow through the bridge lane addition
  • Fewer delays from reduced future maintenance and repair works

Schedule

  • Archaeological investigations – Completed in 2021
  • Advanced clearing works – Completed in fall 2021 and early 2022
  • Phase 1 utility relocations – Completed in early 2022
  • Permits including environmental, navigable waters, archaeology – Completed in early 2023
  • Advanced piling construction (south approach) – Completed in fall 2023
  • Advanced excavation work (north approach) – Completed in fall 2023
  • Begin construction (main bridge contract) – Winter 2023/24
  • Complete construction – Spring 2026

Public consultation

The Province is complying with the requirements of the Canadian Navigable Waters Act throughout the project-approval and construction phases. We invite input from all Shuswap River users, such as boaters, paddle boarders and others who travel beneath the bridge and would have an interest in river channel access during the construction of a new bridge.

The design of the new bridge will provide greater clearance than the existing bridge, allowing vessels to pass under the bridge at high water. The mid-river channel will remain open for navigation during construction except for a few very short periods. Appropriate signs, safety warnings and information will be available to provide advance notice and direction. The old bridge will be entirely removed when the new bridge is open to traffic.
